The remains of a hunter-gatherer camp have been uncovered a few hundred meters from Monte Frignone. The archaeological mission of the University of Pisa, led by N. Mazzucco and funded by a joint project between Pisa and CSIC (Juan F. Gibaja), has allowed for the expansion of the excavations carried out by Prof. C. Tozzi in the early 2000s.
The new results have highlighted the existence of a deposit still rich in archaeological materials, which can be dated, based on initial evaluations, to a phase of the late Mesolithic. In addition to the artifacts, various fire zones and a pit hearth have been uncovered. The charred remains collected will be studied in collaboration with L. Morandi from the University of Pisa to determine not only the plant species used as fuel but also to identify any remains of edible plants and seeds. The objective of the excavation is also to reconstruct the evolution of the Garfagnana high mountain region during the mid-Holocene.
Several B.A. and M.A. students from the University of Pisa have participated: Alvise Bianchi, Tommaso Colombini, Denisa Dragaj, Marco Nait, Arianna Nocchi, Sonia Parisotto, Katerina Pavloglou, Giada Pirrone.
