Research on the earliest population of the Italian peninsula

  • Director: Arturo Marzano
  • Scientific Director: Cristiana Petrinelli Pannocchia

The project aims to investigate the mobility and settlement models of the neolithic communities from Italy. To date, our research focuses on the analysis of the archaeological evidence that emerged in the Abruzzo region and their correlation with the rest of the peninsula.

The neolithisation of central Italy is traditionally believed to have started a few hundred years after the first evidence from the southeastern regions of the peninsula. However, the northwards spread of agriculture might be more complex and faster than previously known. New data at our disposal underline that the first farmers arrived by sea and by the inner paths at the beginning of the 6th millennium cal BC in this area. Since 2019 our research is aimed to investigate the site of Rio Tana (AQ), a settlement associated with the impressed ware culture.

The project is in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per le province di L’Aquila e Teramo, ICCOM-CNR of Pisa, Department of Earth Sciences-University of Pisa, CNR-IGAG of Rome.

Settlers are founded by the Department of Civilization and Knowledge-University of Pisa (429999_20_R_IST_AUT_MAR), Municipality of Celano (AQ) and Municipality of Lecce nei Marsi (AQ).
