MAP (Mitrou Archaeological Project)

Co-directed by Aleydis Van de Moortel and †Eleni Zahou (2004-2021) and subsequently by Aleydis Van de Moortel and Euthymia Karantzali (2021-present), MAP is a collaboration between the University of Tennessee and the Directorate of Antiquities of Phthiotis and Evrytania, under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In this project, Salvatore Vitale is the principal investigator for the study of ceramics ranging from the Late Helladic IIA to the Late Helladic IIIB periods. Within the MAP framework, Salvatore Vitale’s main research interests focus on: ceramics and relative chronology; the process of Mycenaean cultural identity formation in central Greece; and the socio-political trajectories of Mitrou during the pre-palatial and palatial phases of Mycenaean civilization.
