Pontecosi is an open-air site next to the banks of the homonymous lake near Pieve Fosciana (LU, Italy). The University of Pisa, under the direction of Prof. Carlo Tozzi and Dr. Mario Dini, excavated the site between 1998 and 2000. They found thousands of lithic artefacts and attributed them to the early phase of our species, H. sapiens, arrival into Europe: the Aurignacian. Recently, the artefact assemblage has been re-analysed by Jacopo Gennai and careful observation found several lithic refittings. Lithic refitting combines two or more lithic artefacts from the same original bloc. It is highly informative illustrating the various steps of knapping and, combined with spatial information, tracking it throughout the site. The following lithic artefacts have been digitalised as 3D models by Emanuele Taccola of the LADIRE (University of Pisa). Then the 3D models have been conjoined using a specific software to provide a way to display the refitting. Enjoy!
