This week, the University of Pisa resumed excavations at Monte Frignone (Corfino, Lucca), a site with human occupations dated to the 6th millennium, during the transition between the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The excavation is part of the MESApennines project funded by CSIC (Juan F. Gibaja) and co-directed by N. Mazzucco (University of Pisa).
The project aims to study the process of Neolithization in the north-western Apennines. The new excavations will provide information on the anthropic impact on Holocene vegetation and verify the extent of human occupation in the Garfagnana mountains. The area was previously studied in the early 2000s by a team led by C. Tozzi and M. Dini from the University of Pisa, which identified an important sequence from the Epigravettian to the Neolithic.
